By Nick Tomb

Kofi’s father is a fisherman—just as his father was before him.  As global fish stocks decline and illegal fishing ravages West Africa, his catch continues to get smaller and smaller, with more plastic trash than edible fish in his nets.  Despite the economic hardship, the bond between father and son is strong.

We hear so much about the challenges facing Africa—challenges that are very real.  We hear much less about the spirit of the people and the strong familial bonds that keep the societies resilient in the face of such adversity.  In writing MDAM, I wanted to highlight the challenges (especially the financial challenges facing everyday people as their environments change and the livelihoods that have supported them for generations are no longer viable), but also the universal love between fathers and sons–and mothers and daughters.  Despite the hardship, humanity perseveres.
